The PCC Talks With Sister Isabel Fiat of the Sisters of Life in Philadelphia

Sister Isabel Fiat was in her senior year in college in Boston when a friend invited her to a retreat in Connecticut. She agreed to go…just for a weekend away. It turned out to be much more than that.

“It was just what Jesus needed to pierce through my heart,” she said. “I was sitting in adoration one night in a silent retreat and through the ears of my heart I heard him say that ‘I love you. I love you more than anyone.’”

She felt the need to do something in response. She started to discern religious vocation. She eventually came to visit her current order, Sisters of Life.

“I didn’t know a lot about what we do. We serve pregnant women in crisis and we serve women who have suffered abortions,” she said. “And I didn’t know a lot about what we do but I knew that every time I visited I felt at home.”

Sister Isabel loves the work the sisters do to assist pregnant women. She loves the women they serve, who she says are some of the bravest women in the world.

“Our greatest joy is to share this truth—that the human person is beautiful and good—no matter what you’ve suffered.  Whether you’re pregnant and 18 and have nowhere to turn or if you are 75 and had an abortion 50 years ago, the lord wants to say I love you and you’re good.”

Isabel says the Sisters have a mission specifically for what they call hope and healing.

“That’s women who suffered abortions and are experiencing the pain that is left in their heart. We have this approach of accompaniment so we walk with women and accompany them for as many years as they desire as much as they need.”

I asked Sister Isabel if she’s a big Philly sports fan. But I found out Boston is her hometown. She says they do follow sports, but some more than others.

“I did like the Patriots at one point…I’m not a good fan.. I’m a little bit wishy washy unfortunately but some of the sisters are diehard fans so it’s fun to watch when their teams are playing.”
