The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and a Philadelphia law firm are seeking to overturn Pennsylvania’s Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The DOMA, passed in 1996, statutorily defines marriage as the union between one man and one woman in the state of Pennsylvania and does not recognize “marriages” from other jurisdictions that do not meet that definition.
The suit comes only 13 days after the Supreme Court struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act in a 5-4 decision on the basis that the Federal law invaded the rights of the states to define marriage as they deemed best.
The U.S. Bishops remind us, “The common good of all, especially our children, depends upon a society that strives to uphold the truth of marriage. Now is the time to redouble our efforts in witness to this truth. These decisions are part of a public debate of great consequence. The future of marriage and the well-being of our society hang in the balance.”
Governor Tom Corbett is named in the suit. Send him a message today to say you support marriage and the defense of Pennsylvania’s DOMA.
