In Pennsylvania, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, helps families and individuals in need heat their homes through the winter.
As we enter the cold winter months, many of us look forward to comforts like hot chocolate and Christmas decorations. But for some Pennsylvanians, including the elderly and disabled, winter signals a time of serious anxiety about whether or not they will be able to pay the heating bills to keep themselves and their families safe as temperatures drop below freezing. LIHEAP is an important service for those in need.
LIHEAP is a federally funded program that consists mainly of grants paid directly to the utility company on behalf of the family or individual in need. Crisis grants are also available to families in immediate danger of living without heat.
Pennsylvanians can apply for LIHEAP benefits online, by downloading forms, or at your local county assistance office. If you can questions, you can call the LIHEAP hotline at 1-866-857-7095.
The Department of Public Welfare offers other tips for lowering heating costs and staying warm this winter.
Please help spread the word about this important program for Pennsylvanians in need.
