Journey with Haiti, earthquake response continues

Submitted by AB_Hill on Monday, April 12 2010

Signs of progress are evident in Port-au-Prince: Beauty supply stores and small food kiosks flourish in the tarp-covered camps, the mountains of rubble are eroding under the constant tap of pickax-wielding crews, and the Haitian government has made headway in crafting a long-term strategy to get people out of camps and into homes.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS)/Caritas Haiti earthquake response emphasizes three overarching priorities: save lives, support sustainable livelihoods, and strengthen civil society.

To date, Catholic Relief Services has reached:

  • more than 700,000 with food
  • 45,000 outpatients treated
  • 480 sophisticated surgeries performed
  • 80,000 protected by emergency shelter kits
  • 42,550 people who have benefited from latrines, showers and drinking water
  • 1,700 with cash-for-work jobs

CRS is grateful for the tremendous outpouring of prayers and support for the Haitian people. For more information on CRS’ relief efforts in Haiti as well as prayer resources, educational resources, and information on how you can help with the long-term rebuilding process, please go to www.crs.org or call 877-Help-CRS (877-435-7277).
